The same rhetoric is heard from Tigray one side - that the people lifted and resumed weapons, young people and militias with the university militia and teachers.

This is above a situation already eager. For example, Unocha reports that 5.2 million people in Tigray need humanitarian assistance. About 400,000 of them have "crossed the threshold in famine". UNICEF says that 33,000 children are at risk imminent from the death of famine.

Why can the African Union not put an end to this war and save lives?

Before answering this question, we must first give the organization. The President at the time, Cyril Ramaphosa, appointed former Presidents Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of the Liberia and Kalema Motlanthe from South Africa as special deviators to look for a ceasefire and start mediation talks.

Unfortunately, the Ethiopian government has rebured the efforts of the AU, convinced that its forces walked to Mekelle to eliminate Tigrayan forces.

Since November 2020, however, the AU has sent no envoy, nor any proposal for peace. This contrasts with the efforts of the United States and the European Union, which sent a series of envoys to ensure a cessation of hostilities and bring the sides contracted at the table.

There are at least three reasons why the AU has renounced Africa's most destructive conflicts.

The burden of history

In 1963, the leaders of the thirty-two African states signed the Charter establishing the organization then of African Unity (OAU).

Ethiopia was not just the founding member of the OAU, but it was his core. The direction of the Government of Haile Selassie to the creation of the organization has left a permanent heritage.

The anticolonial successes of Ethiopia are the rocky substrate of the founding principles of the organization.

In short, Ethiopia has a special place in the AU. The country is the heart rate of the organization, integrated with the Union's collective psyche.
