The label comprises twelve buildings for worship which, with a network of corridors and connecting chambers, are fully carved or "hoop" out of living life. The tradition of hewing churches off rock, already attested in the previous periods, is here taken here to a brand new level. The churches, many of which are free, such as Beta Giorgio (St. George Church, image at the top of the page), have more elaborate and well-defined facades. They include architectural elements inspired by the buildings of the Suite period. In addition, some, such as Beta Mariam, characterize exquisite internal decorations (above), which are also carved from the rock, as well as murals. The church interiors mix elements of suites with newer coopo-arab bypass elements.
